Social Entrepreneurship Ideas in Action
Robin Lewis: I’m currently the representative director of Social Innovation Japan, which is a platform to increase and enhance social entrepreneurship and social innovation in Japan and elsewhere in this world. We do this through three main things.
One is we create our own social environmental products, our most well-known one being mymizu, which is a tech-driven platform to reduce plastic waste used in Japan and across some fifty other countries.
We also provide training to social entrepreneurs and to changemakers through workshops and capacity building.
And thirdly, we do ecosystem building. So we organize lots of events. We do pitch nights for social entrepreneurs to really build this ecosystem.
I’m also the CEO of Nature Positive Inc, which is a consultancy focused on improving social and environmental performance for companies, mainly in Japan. We use our experience as social entrepreneurs, as well as concepts like sustainability and the circular economy, to help businesses create new strategies around social and environmental impact and deliver new projects and actions to improve both financial performance and social performance.

How to Be a Force for Social Change
Forming a Social Impact Strategy from Passion
Lewis: I’m half Japanese and half British, so I was born here in Japan and grew up mainly abroad. And I always had this this passion to do something positive for society, whether it’s charity work or humanitarian aid or whatever it was.
But when it got to university time, my family was very adamant that I study business because if I studied business, then I would be a “successful person.”
So I took their advice and enrolled in a business school in Scotland in Edinburgh, and I spent four years studying things like marketing, finance, and strategy. But I felt something was missing in those days.
This is twelve, fifteen years ago. There wasn’t much conversation about how to improve society or how to solve social problems through business. That’s quite a popular topic now, but not back then. So I graduated in 2011, and I remember as I was about to graduate, a lot of my friends, my colleagues, my cohort members were going to the McKinsey and the BCGs and these fantastic consulting firms.
And I was thinking, “Hey, what am I going to do with my life? Because I want to make a difference. But I wasn’t really sure how.”
