In a matured Japanese beer market that is dominated by five major companies (Asahi, Kirin, Suntory, Sapporo, Orion), Scott Brimmer has managed to carve out a successful business venture by brewing great craft beers that have won two bronze awards at the International Beer Competition in 2012. The Japanese craft beer market is currently experiencing dramatic growth which is fueled by consumer interests and passionate brew masters, such as Scott Brimmer, that are willing to make a long-term commitment in developing the domestic craft beer market. More importantly, Scott has taught me about the importance of long-term planning and consumer relationships. Despite the attractiveness of the export market, it is more important for Brimmer Brewing to maintain its long-term relationship with domestic consumers, and to slowly build organizational capabilities before expanding into overseas markets. — By Steven Neo Say Bin
