Mr. Torii started his career at Nippon Roche as assistant to the president and subsequently headed the diagnostic and pharmaceutical businesses. Following his 21 years at Roche in Japan, the US, and Switzerland, he assumed the position of president of Japanese affiliates of Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, Schering-Plough, and Boehringer-Ingelheim before finally joining Novartis as president in 2016.

He is a graduate of Loyola College in Maryland and received his MBA from Sophia University. He also completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. He also served as an Executive Committee member of the Swiss Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan.
