Understanding the Climate Crisis and Its Origins
Rick Grehan: “There’s a lot of talk about the climate crisis, but what exactly is that? Obviously, it stems from global warming. Which is all to do with the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect basically means there’s a lot of greenhouse gases that are being released into the atmosphere. And this forms a kind of blanket that prevents solar radiation from reflecting from the Earth’s surface back into space.”
The Role of Businesses in Combating Climate Change
Grehan: Why is it important for businesses to worry about climate change? I believe governments really are in power for such short periods of time, they don’t have time to implement long-term strategies on climate change. They have too many parties of interest and can’t really make such big changes, because they have to keep favor for voting. Therefore, things are happening too slowly with governments.
NGOs, they’re doing fantastic work. I’m a big fan of NGOs and they help highlight these issues, but they don’t have the influence or the finance to really make those big impacts. So for me, it’s up to businesses to step up and to make these changes that are needed.
Climate Change and Business: Everyday Impacts
Grehan: I think one of the issues is, you know, we really see climate change as something that’s happening really far away, like in the polar regions or underwater like the Great Barrier Reef. But actually, climate change is affecting us on a day-to-day basis. You know, through my work, I’ve seen day-to-day the impact that climate change is happening directly.
One example is kombu production in Hokkaido. For those of you that don’t know, kombu is a seaweed, which is one of the main ingredients for Japanese cooking. Since the 1990s there’s been a 50% reduction in kombu output and this is mainly due to the warming of the oceans to climate change.
Natural Resources, Political Unrest, and Business Challenges
Grehan: How does climate change affect business? Natural resources are a good example. For instance, water in the Middle East. A lot of the political unrest in the Middle East is due to water resources in Syria. Because of climate change, the farmers haven’t been able to grow their crops anymore, so they went to the streets to protest and that led to a total collapse of the Middle Eastern situation.
