Mr. Taniguchi was a councillor for the Cabinet Secretariat (2013-14) and special advisor to the Cabinet of Shinzo Abe (2014). With this work, he has been involved in PM Abe's strategic communications.
He is also a professor at Keio University Graduate School of System Design and Management. After twenty years with Nikkei Business, Japan's foremost business magazine, Mr. Taniguchi joined the Foreign Ministry in 2005 as deputy press secretary. Until he left the ministry three years later, he wrote policy speeches for foreign ministers and prime ministers.
In 1999, the Foreign Press Association in London elected him president, the first from Asia.
Mr. Taniguchi has spent sabbaticals at Princeton University as Fulbright visiting fellow, the Shanghai Institute for International Studies, and the Brookings Institution as a CNAPS fellow. He holds an LLB from the University of Tokyo and has authored and co-authored more than 10 books on modern history and political economy.
