Mx. Joplin is a translator and writer, often covering LGBTQ topics for online publications such as GPlus Media and Tokyo Weekender. In 2019, they provided English translation and subtitling for Taiki Sugioka's award-winning documentary, You Decide (息子のままで、女子になる), following transgender architect and activist Sari Kaede Hatashima.

They graduated from Stanford University in 2015 with two bachelor’s degrees: one in English and another in Japanese studies. Currently, they are in a master’s program at Waseda University GSICCS, studying the role of local queer culture and neocolonialism in Tokyo’s drag scene.

They perform as a drag queen under the stage name Le Horla.
