In 2024, ASEAN and Japan marked a historic milestone: the 50th Anniversary of ASEAN-Japan Friendship and Cooperation. Against a global landscape of geopolitical uncertainty, the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) unveiled two landmark summits designed to harness regional economic synergy. At the heart of this effort lies the ASEAN-Japan Future Generation Business Leaders’ Summit, an initiative that transcends annual meetings to cultivate a sustained, dynamic network of young entrepreneurs and innovators from both regions.

ASEAN and India: Making the Most of Business Opportunities
Last December, the summit’s second meeting in Kyoto, Japan, brought together 35 rising leaders, including prominent figures like Yui Otsuki (CEO of FinT), Tak Nakamura (CEO of Taliki), and Kazuma Ito (CEO of Polipoli). Organized in partnership with JETRO, Polipoli, and other key stakeholders, the event culminated in a Joint Declaration—a roadmap of actionable priorities presented to the Japanese government.
The summit’s outcomes reflect a shift from rhetoric to tangible collaboration. A steering committee, led by young business leaders from Japan and ASEAN, was established to accelerate cross-border exchanges. More notably, the Joint Declaration moved beyond broad statements of intent, zeroing in on six priority areas: business ecosystem development, human resource mobility, circular economy, AI and Web technologies, impact investment, and consumer technology. Each theme was discussed thoroughly during the three-day summit, with participants outlining specific challenges, solutions, and measurable goals.
AI’s Strategic Role in Regional Growth
While discussions spanned diverse sectors, the AI and Web working group drew particular attention. The group argued that leadership in AI hinges not merely on technological prowess but on human capital development—a priority requiring cross-sector collaboration. Their proposals included sector-specific AI literacy programs for traditional industries and regional AI hubs to bridge skill gaps. These initiatives aim to address pressing challenges, such as Japan’s shortage of AI engineers and the region’s brain drain while positioning ASEAN and Japan as co-architects of AI-driven innovation.
Demographic Synergy as a Global Advantage
The summit underscored a critical opportunity: ASEAN’s youthful, tech-savvy population complements Japan’s aging yet technologically advanced society. By combining Japan’s expertise in R&D and infrastructure with ASEAN’s demographic dynamism, the partnership could redefine regional economic resilience. This collaboration isn’t just about filling gaps—it’s about creating a blueprint for how aging and emerging economies can jointly thrive in an era of digital disruption.
