You may have heard the buzz about NFTs, or Non-Fungible Tokens, but what are they?
We’ll discuss what they are, how they are made, what the pros and cons of ownership.
What are NFTs?
Okay, so basically, NFTs are a type of Web3 grift that started in 2014 and got really popular when everyone was locked inside during the pandemic.
NFT stands for Non-Fungible Token. Non-fungible is a roundabout way of saying that something is unique and irreplaceable.
As an example, a dollar bill is fungible, because any dollar bill is worth the same amount, so you can trade one for another without losing anything.
The Mona Lisa is non-fungible—there’s only one original, and any copy made of it is going to be different, and therefore less valuable.
This is not true of digital art, which can be copied infinitely, and all copies are exactly the same.

How do you invest in NFTs?
But if all copies of a digital artwork are the same, how can I, a speculative investor, create the scarcity required to get rich off of them?
That’s where NFTs come in. By creating NFTs, crypto enthusiasts created a way for people to invest in digital art by claiming ownership over it in the form of a “token” on the blockchain.
You can then transfer ownership of your token to another person in exchange for cryptocurrency, hopefully for a profit.
Let’s go over an example.
Say you find a digital drawing of like, a dog wearing a hat and sunglasses online that really speaks to your soul.
If someone has created an NFT that’s linked to that drawing, you can buy the token using cryptocurrency.
You don’t get copyright ownership over the work, and anyone can grab an exact copy of it and save it to their device if they want, but you get ownership over that sweet, sweet token.
All that’s left to do is to wait for the value of the token to go up… somehow, and then sell it for a tidy profit! Bam! You’re rich! And that’s NFTs, basically.
