UiPath, a leading Romanian tech startup, has become a global powerhouse in Robotic Process Automation (RPA). In a conversation with GLOBIS lecturer Fumiaki Tajiri, UiPath Finance Senior Vice President Ionut Valentin Sas spoke about resilience, company culture, and the art of creating corporate value. Sas also shared his vision of how human-machine collaboration and technology integration will shape the future of modern business.
How Automation and AI Drive Business Resilience and Corporate Value
Fuimaki Tajiri: How do automation and AI contribute to business resilience, culture, and corporate value creation?
Ionut Valentin Sas: Software automation has a proven track record of increasing productivity, efficiency, and accuracy in the workplace. When infused with AI, the ability of Intelligent Automation and Robotic Process Automation technology to handle routine tasks meets AI’s cognitive capabilities, making the potential of AI-powered automation almost limitless. That is why we’ve embedded AI into every facet of our platform.
When used to its full potential, AI-powered automation can become a key pillar or even the backbone of a successful digital transformation project. In recent years, global events such as the outbreak of the COVID pandemic, as well as several others with local impact, have shown that without a robust digital infrastructure, businesses and organizations can become vulnerable. Conversely, when an organization can count on a digital workforce that can be scaled up or down at will and perform key business processes 24/7, it builds robustness and resilience. But resilience is not something you put aside for rainy days–with AI-powered automation airlines can better handle peak activity at busy periods for their industry; doctors and nurses can delegate admin tasks to digital assistants to spend more time with patients; and your financial department can make reporting deadlines every time, with increased accuracy and enhanced compliance.
Such profound transformation is always driven by those leaders who believe in the transformative power of automation and AI and who take the necessary steps to build appetite and capacity for their adoption in the workplace. Our experience has shown that the adoption of automation and AI can increase cross-collaboration between departments and foster a thriving culture of innovation. Citizen developers, those business users who acquire skills that allow them to develop automations, often become some of the most vocal ambassadors for AI-powered automation in the workplace.
Our experience working closely with Japanese corporations has shown that AI-powered automation is a strategic tool. Some of our earliest customers globally, one of Japan’s leading financial institutions, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc. (SMFG) and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) launched in 2017 an important initiative aimed at increasing the productivity and efficiency of their operations. The resounding early success of this RPA deployment – the world’s largest at that time – has played a dual role: it reinforced UiPath’s trust in the enormous potential of our technology and paved the way for continued collaboration with Japanese organizations. Increasingly, we’ve seen local customers leverage AI-powered automation to deal with specific challenges and build resilience against global phenomena such as talent shortages and employee burnout.
Redefining Human-Machine Collaboration
Tajiri: In your mind, what does the future of human-machine collaboration look like?
Sas: We are on the cusp of an impactful paradigm change, which will lead us to reimagine the collaboration between employees and technology. The advent of agentic automation – the latest stage in the evolution of automation – will see agents, software robots, and AI work alongside employees. Working effortlessly across disparate systems, it will deliver transformational outcomes across the enterprise, making businesses more autonomous and productive while enhancing the experiences of customers and employees. What will employees do in this new environment? While agents will increasingly take over the majority of business processes that they can perform, employees will continue to expand their roles as supervisors, decision-makers, and leaders.
The collaboration between robots, agents, and employees will also help enable the latter to make dynamic decisions, adapt and handle complex tasks, and make faster and more informed decisions. Eventually, they will be able to use the extra time to perform tasks that only humans are able to perform and excel at: critical thinking, handling complex situations, and using their emotional intelligence and ingenuity to dream up novel solutions to challenges.
Upskilling for a New Era of Technology
Tajiri: How can we help people to understand this new technology?
Sas: In addition to cultivating those inherent human skills that will make us excel in the new workplace, acquiring AI skills is key. For optimal success, organizations and employees themselves must prioritize building capabilities by accessing training programs to upskill and reskill themselves. Moreover, technology vendors should drive training initiatives so that they can ensure they bring a meaningful contribution to empowering the workforce of the future with the critical skills needed to thrive. Not least, academia and NGOs can play an important role as well by including in their curricula-relevant courses. The successful collaboration of all of these players will bring a massive contribution to future-proofing the workforce and eliminating vulnerabilities while ensuring the sustainable adoption of AI and other cutting-edge technologies.
At UiPath, we’ve prioritized offering open and free automation and AI education. Ever since the launch of our training platform, the UiPath Academy, in 2017, we’ve attracted nearly 2 million users. In addition, UiPath boasts a 3-million-strong community of automation and AI practitioners and enthusiasts who connect frequently and support each other to grow and further develop their skills.
