Exponential Organizations. Teal Organizations. HR for the 2020 Workplace. Here are three books showing us today how the organizations of the future will look, recommended by GLOBIS Faculty.

Exponential Organizations

Authors: Salim Ismail, Michael S. Malone and Yuri van Gesst; Recommended by Jorge Calvo

This book shows how Exponential Organizations compete with “traditional organizations,” those slow growing companies built for a linear world: hierarchical, centralized, closed, top-down and focused on ownership due to scarcity of people, resources, assets and platforms… and fear of trying new things.

We live in a disruptive age where change is the constant and velocity is the exponential variable of the equation. Nowadays, the top five largest companies in market capitalization are new and Internet based they did not exist when most of us were born, and all of them have grown above 20% in the last 12 months: Apple (53.7%), Alphabet [Google Group] (20.3%), Microsoft (28.4%), Facebook (36.3%) and Amazon.com (26.9%). In 10 years’ time, it’s predicted that 40% of the Fortune 500 companies will no longer exist. Companies that don’t like change will hate the future.

Building on their ideas from Singularity University, Salim Ismail, Michael S. Malone and Yuri van Gesst describe how new organizations are ten times better, faster, and cheaper than others—and what to do about it. We find the main characteristics and implications of these Exponential Organization, their leadership and corporate culture, why a startup can disrupt a century-old industry, and most importantly how a ‘linear’ company can implement a strategic program in 12 steps, designing and executing its own exponential transformation to compete in the new era.

I hope you will find the reading inspirational and make it your first step to the future, and beyond.

Reinventing Organizations

By Frederic Laloux; Recommended by Tadahiro Wakasugi

This book is philosophical but practical. Why is it so difficult to create an organization that is live-giving, soulful, empowering and free of stress? The author argues that the root cause of workplace demotivation is the misalignment between our consciousness and the current organization model. Examining the past 100,000 years of human history, the author found that the six types of organizations we have invented are tied with our worldview and consciousness. As our consciousness is currently evolving into the next level, we need a completely new paradigm of organization model, what the author calls the Teal Organization. The new paradigm values wholeness – “bringing together the ego and the deeper parts of the self; integrating mind, body, and soul; cultivating both the feminine and masculine parts within; being whole in relation to others; and repairing our broken relationship with life and nature”. You will learn deeply about this new model through real-world case studies of pioneering companies.
