Many of us have heard a similar mantra: “Work hard and you’ll be rewarded.” And while we were in school with a universal grading system, that may have been true. But in the corporate world, despite detailed KPIs and task-tracking software, getting recognition doesn’t necessarily follow a simple formula.
Add to that the issue of quiet promotions—where the reward for hard work is more work and not a pay increase—and you have a recipe for discontent.
What does ‘tiara syndrome’ mean?
Coined by Carol Frohlinger and Deborah Kolb, the term gained popularity when it was used in Sheryl Sandberg’s book Lean In.
The expression describes the experience of (usually) female employees diligently doing their work and excelling in their positions but not taking an active role in self-promotion, as if they are waiting for management to recognize their efforts by placing a tiara on their heads.
Seven things to consider to be your best ally
Self-advocacy doesn’t come naturally to everyone, so here are some ways to raise your profile in your organization:
1. Don’t assume others are aware of your progress
While some companies may have a formal method of tracking your KPIs for quarterly and annual reviews, not all do. Keep a record of work you complete throughout the year to reference for 1-on-1’s. If you don’t have regular meetings with your manager, take the initiative to schedule them. These meetings are your chance to highlight how much of an asset you are to your team or department.
2. Emphasize the link between your contributions and results
A key part of self-advocating is demonstrating your value to an organization. Maybe you organized a company retreat and the result was a smooth event that allowed everyone to share ideas and build rapport. Or you researched potential vendors and negotiated a better contract for web maintenance. The key is to show a clear association between what you did and how it created tangible results that benefit the company.
3. Negotiate for changes that will set you up for success
Many companies try to treat all employees equally, not recognizing the difference between equality and equity. If you can make the case for a change that would lead to you producing better results, go for it. Whether it’s a new certification or shifting your work hours 30 minutes earlier, don’t be afraid to ask for something with an ROI for both you and your company.
4. Expand your network within the company
Yes, the term “networking” can lead to an anxiety spike, but unfortunately building up your reputation in an organization takes more than making friends with just the coworkers you like. It often means making the effort to know someone from each department. Sometimes a quick chat at a company social event is enough to create a connection. And while this can feel artificial and strategic, it’s important to lay the groundwork for future collaborations. Your name will never come up as a candidate if nobody knows who you are.

5. Learn to play nice with company politics
Where humans are concerned, politics is sure to follow. But it’s sometimes beneficial to shine a bit brighter when interacting with people of influence or power within the company. Find out who the key stakeholders are and make the most of any interactions you have with them. Once again, if you’re invisible, you can’t receive recognition.
6. Read between the lines
Vocalizing your contributions has a time and place. Be mindful of your audience and how receptive they are to what you are saying. It’s important to be aware of when to shift the focus of the conversation to something (or someone) else. Too much self-promotion and you risk being labeled a braggart.
7. Recognize when to walk away
Finally, if all else fails you and you see your coworkers rise in the ranks with no recognition heading your way, it may be time to consider other options. Sometimes there are forces at play preventing you from making progress that are not worth the battle. Know your value and find somewhere that will appreciate you.
